Drive - New Inn

Drive (pich by George Curran)

John Robb passed my name onto fellow Mancunians Babydigger. They sent me a tape I thought was excellent. I couldn’t wait to get them over to play a gig. Around this time, people in Belfast contacted me. Jailcell Recipes were coming to Ireland to play and wanted to visit Dublin. I booked the New Inn for the 2 gigs. Hope’ was put on the posters in the ‘hope’ that people might go along even if they didn’t know the bands, as we were the people who had put on Fugazi. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case for either gig. There was a miserable turnout at both. We would have lost a fortune had we been made to pay the full price for the venue. Smiley realised that we were trying and let us off with any shortage we had. We had money left from the Fugazi gig that went to pay off the bands travel expenses but those NEW INN gigs were jinxed.

First D.I. not happening, now this. What else could go wrong? There was still the toilet smashing craze to contend with. It was hard to ‘police’ the toilets for a whole gig, therefore they were prime targets for vandalism. By the end of each gig the ladies were flooded. Someone found it a great laugh. We sure didn’t. Thankfully the toilet smashing craze didn’t last very long. Lost £210 on Jailcell Recipes, Lost £96 on Babydigger

Nomeansno, Not Our World, Killercrust, Trenchtown, Sloth – Dublin 1990

April 24 1990

Nomeansno, N.O.W., Killercrust, Trenchtown, Sloth

New Inn
Nik Evans was the person organising the British end of a tour for Nomeansno. He rang to ask if we would be willing to get the band a gig in Dublin. I was a fan of the band so readily agreed and knew that the New Inn would be perfect. It had plenty of space to allow people to dance. Unfortunately for me I was also pretty sick around this time. I had been out of work since the previous December and had been diagnosed as having Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome. I had little energy to deal with all the intricacies of gig promoting. Other bands had to be contacted, posters/fliers made and distributed. Fergus and Paddy helped out immensely with this one. We decide to meet up regularly in my house and discuss forthcoming gigs.

During our discussion it was felt that it would be a good idea to have the Nomeansno gig as a benefit. We thought that seeing as there would be a decent crowd there, we could raise some money for an organisation but more importantly try and raise some awareness. Amnesty International seemed a good choice. Nomeansno were happy if they got their travel expenses and all other bands played for free.

I spent most of Nomeansno’s set in a car outside the venue and therefore didn’t get to see someone hurting their ankle dancing. They were happy with the £20 we gave them for their taxi fare and their hospital fee

D.I., The fFlaps (cancelled on night) – Dublin 1990

March 23 1990

D.I., The fFlaps (cancelled on night) New Inn

The next band Jabs wanted to send to Ireland was D.I. The New Inn was a new venue being run by Smiley Bolger. Smiley lived around the corner from my parents and he was infamous, due to his friendship with Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy. This venue was bigger than the Grattan and had space for people to dance so we decided to book it. It was on the outskirts of the city but we hoped that people would be willing to travel that little bit extra. However 2 days before the gig we heard that DI weren’t  willing to travel at all.

They needed to cancel their Irish leg of the tour due to lack of finances. We were in a dilemma. What to do? If we were to cancel the whole thing at this stage we would be letting the venue down plus people might not hear about it. They would still go out of their way for no gig. I rang Anhrefn to see if they could come over at short notice. They were busy but some friends of theirs, The fFlaps, were available.

We told The fFlaps that we would pay their ferry costs if they could make it for the gig. They agreed so we went ahead with it. But worse was to come. On the night someone managed to sneak into the venue, break a toilet and flood the place. The electricity went so the gig couldn’t happen after all. Maybe it was a gig destined not to take place but the results of one person’s stupidity had a profound effect. They managed to spoil The fFlaps trip to Ireland, ruin many peoples’ evening, cost us nearly £300 AND get away with it. The craze of abusive heckling was giving way to toilet smashing.
