Starting off tonights show with a niod to C86 indie pop and the sweet sounds of Sarah Records. Amelia Fletcher has had an illustrous career singing in pop bands, bands like Talulah Gosh, Heavenly and Marine Research. The Catenary Wires is her latest project, dreamy vocals and guitar

The Middle Ones have also got that sound, delicate pop vocals with a joyous energy. No need for drum and bass just an explosion of excitement

BIS came to Dublin soon after Heavenly in the 1990’s Their gig with Bikini Kill was one of those seminal moments in Dublin’s Underground history. They’ve a new album out and it harks back to that times.

Hooligan are form Dublin and their No Blacks, no dogs, no irish speaks of a time when Irish people were discriminated after leaving this country for a (better) future. it reminds me of the treatment many immigrants are getting now, people whose homes have been bombed, they have no home to leave or go back to. These people need our support and comfort, not our words of anger

Leatherface are just brilliant, can’t say fairer than that.

THe tickturds are from Colchester, they have a new cd out, chaotic to the max, this is from their 2014 release, Tickturdius Maximus.

Everywhere I look these days Wonk Unit are being mentioned, or maybe just appearing. Their latest cd, Nervous Racehorse, is on the excellent TNS records so I will forgive some of their unfunny jokes.

Wonk UNit are touring with Slaves in the UK, For every diy publication mentioning wonk unit there is some established music organ looking to praise Slaves, hard to believe they are a two piece, such is the power of their sound

Fights and Fires are a hardcore band from the UK, some great angry power songs

Jeff Rosenstock is a DIY music scene stalwart. He is coming to Dublin at the end of the month for what should be a great show. He has featured on many releases including this and Bomb the music industry. It is on Easter Sunday if you can drag yourself away from Easter Eggs

No Monster Club have a new record out, I have yet to get my hands on a physical copy but hope to have that rectified soon. Arms Across America is from their People are wierd album.

Known by many as stoner rock Black Mountain are from Vancouver, they have just released their fourth album. I don’t know what stoner rock means but I like this song

16 years ago Mike and the Melvins were supposed to release an albhum. The melivins got distracted as did godHead Silo’s bass player, Mike Kunka. Was it worth the wait? is anything worth waiting that long for?

The pUKEs ukelele punk is a perfect antidote from the rock testosterone that preceded it. Sometimes 20 members onstage at their chaotic gigs, mental but great fun

Sissy from Dublin sing about a subject that has taken a back seat since the recent general election but no doubt will gain traction, the 8th amendment of irelands constitution as the song takes Enya’s sail away on a different journey for a frightened girl leaving Ireland to the vast island of the UK for a medical procedure that is illegal in their home country

When Southport brought out their Southern Soul album I was blown away. it is such a good record but ignored by many. I travelled over to Bolton to see them and Stay Clean Jolene in a memorable gig. i wanted to say that new album you’ve just released is one of your best. Please keep playing. Spread the word. I tried, they listened but life has got in the way since. It is still a great album

Hard left are regulars on this show, singalong punk rock with a strong message

I decided to finish off todays show with a feel good song. Don Dilego plays alternative country but with a postive spirit. Just what we need in these challenging times

Be the change you want

This weeks News – August 31

This weeks news August 31

Instigators were a UK hardcore band who played Ireland in 1988. I remember being blown away by their onstage antics as singer Andy Turner used the wooden stage as a springboard. he moved trampoline like from amp to amp, corner to corner. Their first album was re-issued on Skuld last year, with the Second Now available for pre order from Boss Tuneage

Also available to preorder on Boss Tuneage is Retard Picnic by the Stupids.

It’s not just UK bands that are getting re-issues – US legendary hardcore band The Dicks have had some of their records re-issed by Alternative tentacles including Kill from the heart . There is a movie about the band being screened around the States over the next while.

On the way

slf
Many of us old punks remember Stiff Little Fingers as having some classic punk songs. Infalmmable material was the album that took us away from our 4 bedroom walls and inspired many to make their own noise. Henry Cluney and Jim Reilly from the band are back playing as XSLF. They are returning to Dublin on September 19 to play in Fibber Magees. Also on the bill are Dublin Street Punk band, Hooligan, Dundalk punkers The GAKK and Clash Jam Wallop. All for €10, bargain

There’s plenty of excitment for Fuzz coming to Dublin this week. They are bringing their riff laden sound to Whelans on Wednesday. As U:mack put it “The mood is not light. The songs project a state of perpetual paranoia and eroding mental health.
And as it should be, you know? It’s a record for the burners.”

Dublin Songs and Stories was an event organised by the people behind Come here to me blog. It was a night exactly as described and raised over €2,000 for Pieta Housse. The second colume is on this week and is a benefit for Rape Crisis centre. BP Fallon, Steve Averill and ADW will be telliong some tales, Mick Pyro and John Flynn will be singing some songs and there will be loads more in between. Sounds like a great night ahead .

We start off tonights show with two songs by Torche who are playing in Dublin this week in the Grand Social . They have been on the go sonce 2004 but this is the first I heard of them. I’m enjoying their Harmonicraft album in the same way as I ejoyed listening to Seaweed many years ago.

I’ve seen No Age twice before and am glad to hear they are returning next month. Their new album, “an object??” is out now on Sub Pop , which ironically is the same label Seaweed were on.

Goldblade were magic last week at the rebellion festival. I saw them twice, once acoustically at a HMV and the other in the Winter Gardens where the darts world championships were held recently. Both times I was part of the singalong screaming “We’re all in it together”

Rudimentary Peni didn’t play rebellion but many of their compatriots from Crass, subsequently Corpus Christ records, played. Southern have re released Rudimentary Peni’s collection so I’ve played a song from Cacophony and Archaic

Hunx and his Punx have a new album on Hardly Art called Street Punk, must be good so.

Hooligan are from Dublin and have released a new ep, No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs. This track from it is Callin Joe Strummer and sure with a title like that you’d have to play it eh

We move to UK and have the Dauntless ELite . Their Graft lp is a much ignored album but really deserves more attention. It’s on Bombed Out records and comes with a big recommendation

Southport, I can’t sing their praises any higher. Southern Soul is their third album, their best to date and album of the year so far. Can I convince you to go and buy? Please

Grant Hart used to be in a band Called Husker DU. Maybe you’ve heard of them. He hasn’t done much in recent years but has come up with a concept album. A brave thing to do in todays throwaway times. It is a double album and really needs to be played in one sitting from start to end as it is a life tale. I don’t have 74 minutes to spare for you so Morning Star will have to for now

Like Grant Hart, TV Smith was in a famous band – the Adverts. Tim has kept going all through the years and his energy is infectious. His last album, Misinformation Overload contains a songs I’ve played a couple of times – the good times are back, so in the interest of diversity I’m playing a different one tonight.

I’m going on a bit of Rebellion set now. I’ve already played GOldblade and TV Smith but the next few songs are from bands that played great sets last week

Wrecks feature two people from Steve Ignorants new band, Slice OF life. They have a new ep out Hey! Murder, Arms is from this

Hard Skin, again, had a thousand people, proclaiming at the top of our voices “We are the Wankers” which is a sight to behold I can tell you. THis song is from their new album (of which there is two versions, one sung by the band and the other with guesat female vocalists

One great thing about Rebellion every year is that there are always new bands to discover and remember. THe Roughneck Riot are one such band – awful sound but a great performance.

Leftover Crack are the opposite. I never really like them live but love the records.

Zounds are an old favourite of mine. I wasn’t sure what their set was going to be like and was a bit concerned that it would seem stale. No need for such concerns as they played like they were 20 again.

The Flatliners put in a great performance, their acoustic set was beset with sound issues but no such issues were to be found with their full set. Hopefully they will be back next year. They do have a new album coming out next month

Ruts DC stole the show again. PLaying a mix of their own dub inspired tracks and their own classic Ruts songs. We were dancing, we were smiling, we were crying for lost ones and were enthralled by Ruts DC

The Membranes didn’t play but feature members of Goldblade. I was in town earlier at the Dublin fanzine Fair which was on in he Exchange building in Temple Bar. I passed by the New Theatre which was where the Membranes played on their second crazy visit to Dublin
